Have you heard about the mother who gave her son two beautiful apples? One, however, was larger and shinier than the other. She placed them in his hands and wishing to teach him about sharing, said to him, “Be sure to give your little sister first choice.” A short time later she noticed that he had kept the larger apple for himself. So she asked, “Why didn’t you give your sister first choice?” “I did,” the boy replied, “I told her she could have the little apple or none at all. And she took the little apple.”
This goes to show that there is a lot of selfishness in all of us. Actually we are all born that way. That is why little children can be surrounded with toys, yet fight over one they both want. Sadly to say we never outgrow that particular sin so that, even in old age, it continues–maybe even grows worse. Woe is me, what can be done about it?
The good news is that we all can be victorious over this evil. It is called the new birth. God tells us that when we receive Jesus into our heart, something wonderful happens. It is described in II Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” As new creations in Christ, God will enable us to follow His admonition, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Oh, may God help us to stop being stingy and share with others!
