"A New Song" FEBRUARY 2016

Bible Study

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

My dear Christian Mother used to read a story from the Bible every evening when her 5 children were put in bed; it never failed—a story from God’s Word and a kiss!  That has been almost 90 years ago, but the wonderful memory lingers on.  One of those stories was about King Nebuchadnezzar and the fiery furnace!  I can still imagine its flames.

Daniel tells of how the mighty King of Babylon, proud as a peacock, erected a giant idol, about 90 feet high, covered with gold, placed it on the plain of Dura and demanded that everyone, at the sound of music, bow down, and worship the idol.  (Daniel 3).

You know the story:  The three Hebrew young men, Shadrach, Meshack and Abed-nego all refused to bow to his idol, and consequently were cast into the burning fiery furnace!  God’s people today are not cast into a literal furnace, but we do have our troubles and trials. (I Peter 4:12).  When we are in the fire, let us take five lessons from these young men.

THERE WAS A COMPANIONSHIP IN THE FIRE.

When old King Neb looked in the furnace expecting that the three men would be nothing but cinders, he must have jumped like a scalded cat because they were not only alive and well, but there was another One with them who could have been none other than Jesus in His pre-incarnate form.  You know what? We are never alone in the furnace of affliction.  Jesus is always with those who trust and love Him.  Sometimes we may feel alone and neglected, but that’s an illusion because He said He would never leave us or forsake us no matter what.  (Hebrews 13.5).
  • THERE WAS FREEDOM IN THE FIRE.  They were not huddled over in some corner of the furnace, but they were walking around.  The proud old king had bound them hand and foot, but he could not fetter them; they were free.  Health and economics and sorrow and depression may try to bind us; but even on a sick bed or in a wheel chair, we have perfect freedom of our spirit and soul!  Paul, who had a lot more trials than we will ever have declared, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed.”  (II Cor. 4:8-10).  Praise God—there is freedom of spirit and soul no matter what Satan hurls at us, the jerk.
  • THERE WAS CONTENTMENT IN THE FIRE.  When old King Neb looked into the burning fiery furnace, his mouth dropped open so far he almost lost his upper plate (don’t look for a verse on this).  But he was amazed.  For sure he thought the young men would be agonizing in the fire and that they would be screaming and crying and clawing to get out.  But no.  There they were—like they were walking to a Sunday school picnic.  They were happy and rejoicing in their God.  When we get into the furnace, let us be sure we do not cry and moan and make a spectacle of ourselves by crying on how hard we have it, blaming God or anyone else we can think of, and being a pain in-the-neck to all those about us.  Let us emulate the Hebrew boys and relax and rejoice in Jesus!  (Phil 4:11).
  • THERE WAS NO HARM IN THE FIRE.  Oh the fire could burn away the fetters and singe the king’s whiskers but never touch the men themselves.  God kept them safe, bless His Holy Name!  Friend, the fires of our affliction cannot really hurt;  Jesus talked about that. He told us not to worry about what happens to the body; just be sure our eternal soul is safe in Him.  (Matt. 10:28)  I do not intend to make light of troubles but to keep them in their proper place.  (Romans 8:18)
  • THERE IS GREAT WITNESS IN THE FIRE.  Because these men obeyed God and refused to go along with the world, a great king had to confess that there is but one God—Jehovah; and commanded his empire to worship Him.  Perhaps you are in the fire today.  Maybe it is your health or your job or your marriage or the loss of a loved one.  When that happens, we must do like the three Hebrew children; we must trust and love God no matter what happens—no matter which way the wind blows.  When we humbly trust God and leave everything in His loving, nail-pierced hands, we can help others find Christ.   (Romans 8:28).

By the way remember, we cannot continue this ministry unless God’s people support it financially and prayerfully.  I’ll preach the best I can, but it also depends on you and your pocketbook.  Pray about it.  Ask God what He wants you to do.

In our Savior’s Love,
Harold E. Salem, Pastor

Letters From Our Viewers

Dear Friends of Christian Worship:  first of all, I apologize for not being able to express myself in English.  I send a reception report their emissions in this language, tuned from Valencia in Spain,   which I hope will serve to know how their broadcasts are received in Europe.  I am a fan of Anglo-Saxon culture and the Christian religion and found their very interesting emissions.  In this first year, I wish you a 2016 in which God bless you all and his ecumenical work.  I welcome very warmly from Spain.

VALENCIA, SPAIN

Myself and fellow believers here Alouette Correctional Center for Women in Maple Ridge BC are living here, but we are able to be part of your congregation so THANK you very much!  I’ve encouraged many to watch your services. (We each have a TV in our cells).  We greatly appreciate hearing and seeing you.  We are grateful for God’s hope you remind us to hold onto.   Grace and Peace to you, Christian love from the residents of ACCW.

MAPLE RIDGE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

Thank you so much for your continuing work for Christ and for our spiritual welfare.  We are members of a local church here near Camp Pendleton Marine Base in Oceanside, California (we are temporarily dislocated from our permanent Colorado Springs, Colorado address), but we still try to listen to your message when possible.  Your broadcast is always uplifting for us.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

Pastor Salem, I enjoy watching you on the Christian channel every Sunday morning.  I admire you so much.  Pastor preaching faithfully at your age.   I remember so well my dad visiting South Dakota with my uncle.  I believe that was the only state he desired to visit.  It was hard to make ends meet in those days for 7 people.   I know Jesus is holding my hand and walking beside me.  God bless you, In Christian Love.

DELRAY BEACH, FLORIDA     (Former Mrs. New York)

To all those people that write in saying that they think your booklet on suicide might lead to suicide.  I think that the comfort and reassurance that you are giving the loved ones lift behind to deal with the suicide out-weigh the chances that someone might commit suicide because of the booklet.  Besides it is the Word of God and is not coming from you.  Keep on getting the Word and the booklet out.  It is mending hearts.  Thank you.

 CAROL STREAM, ILLINOIS

Thank God  for your wonderful worship hour. I enjoy your beautiful music and unpretentious preaching that is easily understood.  I just can’t stand my church’s loud music with drums and speakers as big as my car.  I leave more jittery and discombobulated than when I arrived.  Your worship hour fills me with the Holy Spirit and peace.

PALMER, MASSECHUSETTS

Thank you for loving Jesus and serving God.  I am grateful for the example and the sharing of the body of Christ through your church.  I am filled with desire to love and serve more every time I am honored to watch your sermons.

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

Thank you very much for choosing to pray for Israel in your Christmas Eve Sermon.  I considered that my most precious Christmas gift EVER.  You were graciously inspired by God to pray for my people and my most Holy City Jerusalem, on the eve of the most Holy Day—The Day our Lord and Savior came from heaven.  I have no words to properly thank you.  Of course, you know that there is a promise for those who pray for the Peace of Jerusalem—Look out for it!

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:  They shall prosper that love thee.”  Psalm 122:66

SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA

I want to become a better Child of God.  Could you send me literature on becoming closer to God.

MARBLE ROCK, IOWA

Dear Pastor Salem and Friends, Thank you so much for your weekly programs of Christian Worship Hour.  I try and watch every Sunday on my computer and after hearing of your accident with your leg, I thought I would mention how through many prayers I was brought safely from Bratislava after an operation when I broke my femur on a cruise ship a few years ago.  God bless you all.
