DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY: “How to Overcome Discouragement”

Pastor Salem’s desire was to tell the world of the saving grace of Jesus Christ and to encourage believers in their faith.  It is our hope this classic New Song Bible Study from the writings of Pastor Salem will be a blessing to you.

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me?”

Psalm 42:5a

The Psalmist had many blessings and joys, but he also had times of trouble and sorrow.  In the 42nd Psalm, three times he cries out, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” vs. 5,6,11.  I am sure I have said that more than three times.  But, how do we overcome discouragement?  Let me mention eight ways that have helped me overcome discouragement.

v  READ YOUR BIBLE.   Sometimes I do not feel like reading my Bible, well then, read it anyway!  Sometimes I find I am reading the dumb newspaper instead of the Bible.  No wonder we get in the doldrums when we neglect the Holy Word of God. (Psalm 119:11).

v  TALK TO JESUS.  How do you feel when people ignore you?  Not much fun is it? And yet, how often we neglect our Heavenly Father and never talk to Him unless we need something.  Talking to Jesus changes everything from ugly to beautiful.  (Psalm 40:3).

v  THANK GOD FOR BLESSINGS.  Well, you say, I don’t have many.  O yeah, count your spiritual blessings that are eternal, and you’ll become so busy you will forget about your discouragement.  Jeremiah said it long ago, “His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning.”  (Lamentations 3:22,23).  That is, every day, we have a ton of new blessings from God for which we ought to give thanks.

v  CLAIM THE PROMISES OF GOD.  That is, just believe what God tells you in His Word, the Bible.  Every promise in the Book is secure--heaven and earth will pass away--but not one promise of God will ever fail!  Two promises I love, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”  (Hebrews 13:5). And “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.”  (Romans 8:28).

v  TRY TO HELP SOMEONE.  That is, get your eyes off of yourself.  Don’t have a “pity party”! Do something, in Jesus Name, to help somebody with their load.  You know what, there is always someone in a worse condition than you.  Look around and try to cheer someone who is bearing a heavy load.  Your next door neighbor may have a breaking heart! (Psalm 142:4).

v  FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS.  As long as Peter had his eyes fixed on Jesus, he walked on water!  When he looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink.  Have you ever done that?  I have.  When I look at the tough things staring at me, and don’t keep my eyes on Jesus, I have problems.  Keep Jesus in view and you will never be blue.  (Psalm 42:11).

v  TRUST IN GOD.   The Psalmist put it this way, “Hope thou in God.” (Psalm 42:11).  You know, every time I trust in myself—my wisdom, my strength, my ability—I get down in the mouth.  I know in my heart that I need someone else to help me, and that is the dear Lord Jesus.  He said He would help us, so take Him at His Word! (Philippians 4:13).

v  KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND.  That is, when I get discouraged, I just get my mind on the Great God in heaven, who is my Father because I have received His Son into my heart and life.  I know that my God is going to have the last word and when the curtain comes down on the last act, it will be God on His Throne and all the world under His feet! (Philippians 2:11).

Isn’t that good news?  And yet, there are multitudes who do not know Jesus, His forgiveness and help.  So, what do we do about it?  We proclaim it all over the world with the CHRISTIAN WORSHIP HOUR.  And that is where you come in.  To carry on this ministry, we need your PRAYERS, your GIFTS, and your TELLING OTHERS.

In our Savior’s love,

Pastor Salem
