DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY: “Following Jesus’ Footsteps”

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

The apostle Peter instructs us,

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us

an example, that YE SHOULD FOLLOW HIS STEPS.” I Peter 2:21

To follow His steps means that we look at special places in the life of our Lord, and take lessons from that on how we ought to walk.

v WE FOLLOW HIS STEPS TO BETHLEHEM AND LEARN HUMILITY. We start our walk where Jesus started His walk on earth. Here He is, the Son of God, Lord of Lords, King of Kings--born in a stable, laid in a manger among the animals He created. No baby on earth was ever born in lower conditions. Our first step in following Jesus is to get off our high horse, humble ourselves, ask forgiveness for our sins----then humbly serve God and others. (Isaiah 57:15; James 4:10; Philippians 2:5-9; Luke 14:11).

v WE FOLLOW HIS STEPS TO NAZARETH AND LEARN PATIENCE. Jesus spent thirty silent years in Nazareth. We call them “silent years” because there is not a single word about Jesus except the incident in the temple when He was twelve years old (Luke 2:41-52). If Jesus can wait thirty years, maybe we can wait more than thirty seconds before we get impatient and fidgety, jumpy, and jittery! Carefully read Psalm 27:14. What’s your rush anyway, you can have eternal life! (Psalm 27:14; Psalm 40:1; Galatians 6:9; James 5:7).

v WE FOLLOW HIS STEPS INTO THE WILDERNESS WHERE WE LEARN ABOUT TEMPTATION. After 30 years, Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River by the desert prophet, John the Baptist, then goes out into the wilderness and is tempted by the devil. (Matthew 4:1-11). The lesson for us is twofold: The devil tempts everybody; we all know that. But, with Jesus’ help, we can be victorious over the devil, so take heart and carry on! (I Corinthians 10:13; I Timothy 6:9-10; Hebrews 4:15; James 1:14).

v WE FOLLOW HIS STEPS TO GETHSEMANE WHERE WE LEARN SUBMISSION TO GOD THE FATHER. Our heart aches when we read about Jesus in the Garden where He bowed to the will of Father no matter what the cost might be. Jesus prayed, “If it be possible, let this cup pass”. But it was not possible if He was to pay for the sins of the world---so Jesus prays “Nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done”. (Luke 22:42). Have you been to Gethsemane? If we are living for self, we have never been there. Full commitment, full surrender, full submission to the Father—Jesus did it; we need to do it too. And, by God’s grace, we can! (Psalm 46:10; Matthew 6:10; II Corinthians 12:9; Hebrews 12:6).

v WE FOLLOW THE STEPS TO CALVARY WHERE WE LEARN TO DIE TO SELF. Jesus paid it all, and there can be no less for any of us if we want to be His disciples. (Luke 9:23). St. Paul said he had “crucified himself” so that the only life he had was given to God. (Galatians 2:20). By God’s grace and our determination, we can do the very same thing! (Matthew 10:38,39; Luke 14:33).

v WE FOLLOW HIS STEPS TO THE TEMPLE AND LEARN HOW TO GIVE. Don’t forget that giving our tithes is important to God. Jesus went to the temple, “and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury.” (Mark 12:41). That day Jesus did not go to the temple to pray, teach, or heal---He went to see how much people put in the offering! Why? Because our giving shows how much we love the Savior. You know what? YOUR love for Jesus makes this ministry possible. Praise God, let’s keep on loving and giving. (Malachi 3:5; Nehemiah 10:32; Matthew 23:23; II Corinthians 9:6).

God bless you.

In our Savior’s love,

Pastor Salem
