"A New Song" August 2025

I Will Be With Thee

Bible Study

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

God assures us that,

“When thou passest through waters, I WILL BE WITH THEE.

When thou walkest through the fire, thou shall not be burned.”  Isaiah 43:2

From the writings of Pastor Salem:

During our life, at one time or another, we have all gone through the fire and the flood.  Perhaps some of you are in it right now.  But God has a reason and purpose for every one of them.  Let’s look at 5 of those reasons:

v HE LEADS US THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLOOD TO STRENGTHEN OUR FAITH.  Faith is all important.  It is the door to salvation, we are saved by faith in the Savior, nothing more, nothing less.  (Romans 4:5).  Faith is so important that we cannot please God if we do not have that faith in Him.  (Hebrews 11:6).  Thus, we start our Christian life.  So, the floods and the fires teach us to trust, to grow in faith!  Job said that, because of his trials his faith would be like pure gold!  (Job 13:10; Isaiah 58:11; Hebrews 12:2).

v GOD LEADS US THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLOOD TO TEST OUR OBEDIENCE.  Look at Daniel, God commanded him not to worship an idol, and his obedience put him in a lion’s den-----but Daniel obeyed even though it seemed he would have to die doing it.  And, oh yes, the ordeal on Mt. Moriah!  (Genesis 22:2).  Talk about fires and floods, Abraham went through it all, but he was obedient.  St. Paul stood before King Agrippa and declared, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,” even though it eventually cost him his life.  (Matthew 4:19,20; Acts 26:19; Ephesians 5:8).

v GOD LEADS US THROUGH THE FIRE AND FLOOD TO TEACH US PATIENCE.  Are you ever impatient?  Don’t ask me that question.  We live in a society that is constantly on the go, and a fast ‘go’ at that.  And where are we going, and what do we do when we get there?  St. Paul told us to live our life with patience and not get in a dither over anything.  (Romans 12:1).  The Psalmist told us 3,000 years ago to “Wait on the Lord:  be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.  (Psalm 27:14).  Maybe you are in the middle of a mess so that God can teach you patience.  (II Peter 1:6; Psalm 46:10; Psalm 103:13).

v GOD LEADS US THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLOOD TO KEEP US HUMBLE.  When things fall apart, when the flood overwhelms us, we quickly learn that we are not as great and mighty as we had supposed.  It is easy to become proud, so God sends the fire and the flood to bring us to our senses, settle us down, and make us humble so He can use us!  (Proverbs 16:18; James 4:6).  Search the Bible, you will never find a single place where God used a proud person.  Thank God, He humbles us.  (Psalm 90:12).

v GOD LEADS US THROUGH THE FIRE AND THE FLOOD TO INCREASE OUR LOVE FOR HIM.  Peter went through the fire and the flood, it was his own making, but it was real.  Out of that bitter experience Jesus asked him three times, if he loved Him.  Peter’s love was growing. Our love can become lukewarm, in a marriage or with our Lord.  That was God’s complaint about the church of Laodicea.  (Revelation 3:15).  And don’t forget Job who not only went through the fire and flood but death and destruction and out of it all was a deepening love for God; God may let him die but Job is going to love Him.  (Job 13:15; I Peter 5:7).

Friend, are you in the fire and the flood today?  If so, take heart.  God knows all about it and will only bring good out of it, just trust Him.  Romans encourages us on this journey called life. But we need your help in continuing this ministry.  We need your PRAYERS, and your GIFTS, no matter if they are large or small, and we need your GOOD WILL as you tell others about our ministry.  God bless you! (II Corinthians 6:1).

In our Savior’s love,

  Pastor Salem

Devotional

“Waiting on the Lord”

Psalm  40:1

Do you like to wait?  I don't know about you, but I know for myself I utterly despise it.  When you check out in the grocery line,  which line do you take?  I take the shortest, or what I think will be the shortest.  The last time I did that I found a line with only one little, old, kind-looking lady in it.  It was a no-brainer, hers was definitely the shortest line-- needless to say, I took it.  And yes, you guessed it, I was dead wrong.  The dear little soul was searching in a big humungous purse for a certain coupon that would save her a few cents!

I waited until the long line next to me cleared thru twice!  Lord have mercy.  While I was stewing about that, God laid on my heart an experience that the great David tells us about in the 40th Psalm.  David writes, “I waited patiently for the Lord.”  So here is David, he's waiting, not on some little, old lady, but he's waiting on God! And when David says he “waited patiently,” in the language of the day it means, he “waited and waited and waited.”  So, I was in good company.  David says he fumed with God because he had to wait.

David goes on in this 40th Psalm and tells us that, in God's time, God came to him and “put a new song in my mouth.”  Now the whole world changes, God has blessed David and given him joy in his heart. That was a happy ending for David, but the same thing could happen to us!  Oh, I'm not saying that everything will break the way we want it too, but the right thing will happen if we are patient and wait on the Lord.  During the time of waiting, lessons can be learned.  In the quiet times when we are waiting on God, we can find the meaning of humility.  The world does not revolve around our beck and call, God is in charge, and when I close my prayer each time, I pray, “Thy will be done.”  Not my will, but God's will.

Believe me, dear friend, God is worth waiting for! If waiting brings us into line with the perfect will of God, believe me, it is time well spent.  But waiting can bless us in other ways too.  For instance, when we wait on someone or something, it teaches us perseverance.  I'm from the old school and my Mother taught me, “If you start something, finish it!”  Persevere.  We have a generation now that, if something doesn't suit them, they just jump ship.  That eventually reflects upon our Christian service or living.  If God calls us to do a work, then patience and perseverance comes to the fore because it involves our relationship with God.

Patience is time well spent and if we spend the time with God, it will bless us and everyone around us.  As David says, “many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” So, the next time you get hung up, smile, twiddle your thumbs, and trust God!

It is our hope you enjoy and are encouraged by these short devotionals

by Pastor Salem as we occasionally include them.
