"That I Might Know Him"

Bible Study

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

The Apostle Paul uttered a little, short prayer in Philippians 3:10 just five words,  “That I may know Him.”  That was the goal of Paul’s life, he stayed at his post until the day God called him home.

From the writings of Pastor Salem:

I have run that verse through my mind a dozen times, I suppose.  I feel all of us feel the same way, hence this study:

v THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM AS MY SAVIOR.  That just has to be block number one, the foundation of all that is to follow.  I say that because unless we personally know Jesus Christ as Savior, we have nowhere to go.  Peter had it right when he said, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  Thou hast the words of eternal life.”  (John 6:68).  Have you gone to Jesus, confessed your sins, and asked Him into your heart and life?  Unless you have done this you have no hope. (John 3:18; John 14:6).

v THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM AS MY LORD.  That is, my Master.  I am but His slave, and gladly so.  Jesus tells me that if I want to follow Him, I have to put Him first, ask no questions, and joyfully, gladly follow Him.  He tells me I am to follow Him to the death if needs be.  (Matthew 16:24, 25).  He died for me; I will gladly die for Him!  (Galatians 2:20).

v THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM AS MY FRIEND.  There’s not a Friend like the lowly Jesus, no not one.  He sticketh closer than a brother. (Proverbs18:24).  And He promised me that if I took Him as my dear Savior that He would never leave me or forsake me!  (Hebrews 13:5).  Have you ever had anyone leave you, forsake you, or stab you in the back?  I have, more than once.  But in all my years, He has never forsaken me once.  I am ashamed to say, I have failed Him, but He never got mad and turned His back on me.  He never would do that! (John 15:15; Hebrews 13:6).

v THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM AS MY HIGH PRIEST.  Think of that, He is my Priest at the very throne of God!  (Hebrews 4:14).  He prays for me all the time and, because He is MY High Priest, I can approach the very throne of God in prayer.  Unbelievable?  Nope, just read Hebrews 4:16.  And all the time He is there at the very throne of God, He is praying for me, and interceding for me.  (Hebrews 7:25).  And when I sin, the dirty old devil accuses me before God in heaven, and Jesus takes my side and pleads my case, and wins every time!

v THAT I MIGHT KNOW HIM AS MY KING.  The British have a king, but I have the real King!  He is the King of all Kings and the Lord of all Lords!  He is my King, and I belong to His Kingdom.  And He tells me that someday I will reign with Him in His great glorious Kingdom.  (II Timothy 2:12).  If you want a thrill, just listen to the redeemed sing about it: “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power.”  (Revelation 4:11).  All power is His and before it is all done, even the wicked will bow down and bend their wicked knees to this glorious King!  (Philippians 2:9-11).

So, let’s all vow to get to know Jesus better.  St. Paul practiced that goal all his life and if he can do it, so can we.  No matter what happens, we have the presence of the Savior with us every hour of every day.  (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).

We ask you to pray daily for the Christian Worship Hour.  We are doing the very best we know how.  So,

we ask you to stand by us.  Pray that we will be all the dear Lord wants us to be.

 In our Savior’s love,

Pastor Salem

How To Read The Bible

“How To Read The Bible”

Psalm 119:11

My guess is that, somewhere around the house, you have a Bible.  In some homes it has a very prominent place and is well-worn, in other homes it lies hidden somewhere, brand new and covered with dust.  The famous English preacher, Charles Hadden Spurgeon one time said that in most homes the Bible had enough dust on it so you could write the word “damnation” on the cover.  Be that as it may, the Bible is a remarkable Book that comes from the very heart of God.

Peter tells us that “holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (II Peter 1:21). In other words, men who loved and revered God were used by God as His secretaries to write down His messages.  The Holy Spirit moved in the hearts of these men, and they recorded exactly and precisely what God had in mind.  So, when we read the Bible, we read a message that comes, not from men, but through men directly from God. No question but that such a book ought to be treated with reverence.  My Mother taught us that nothing should be placed on that Holy Book, not even a sheet of paper.  My Mother wasn't superstitious, she was reverent to the Almighty.

None of us appreciate, as we should, that marvelous message from God.  And, you know what, we are the poorer in spirit and soul because of our negligence.  So, what to do.  Well, first of all, locate the precious Book.  Then begin to systematically read it. That is, set aside a time of day that you are going to read the Bible.  Fight to keep that time because the Devil is going to do all he can to keep you out of the Word of God.  He gets heartburn when he sees us in the Word, but then, I guess not, because he doesn't have a heart!  He just has evil.  So read the Bible every day.

And also, don't give up if you don't understand parts of the Bible because the Holy Spirit will reveal many truths that will bless and encourage you.  Just eat the meat, don't choke on the bones.  There are some things in the Bible we won't understand until we get to heaven, so forget it, and go on!

And, oh yes, pray before you read.  Ask the Lord to open your eyes and show you what He wants you to see and know.  The Holy Spirit will guide us into the truth if we ask, then listen, and finally act on the truth shown.  Sometimes when I read the Bible, I stop and say, “What was that I just read?  I'm reading the words but thinking about something else.”  In other words, be intentional.  Read a portion, then write down what it is saying to you, what it means to you.  But stay with it, there are great and precious promises, like costly jewels for those who stay with it.  David discovered that centuries ago, as he exclaimed, “More desired as they then gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”  (Psalm 19:10).
