“FACING THE STORMS OF LIFE”

Bible Study

Dear Friend in Ministry:

In John 6:15–21, Jesus tells His disciples to cross over the lake. As they obey, a storm arises, and Jesus comes to their rescue. From this incident, we learn many life lessons that can help us when we find ourselves in the storm.

From the writings of Pastor Salem:

v IN THIS WORLD STORMS ARE INEVITABLE.  Jesus tells us that God “maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:45).  It is just a part of living so don’t be surprised or upset when your turn comes.  I am blessed with many years behind me, and the Lord knows I have had my share of storms.  Not that I am complaining, just facing the facts of life.  (John 16:33; I Peter 4:13-14).

v OBEYING GOD SOMETIMES PUTS US IN THE STORM.  We have some false teachers that tell us that if we obey God, pay our tithe, and keep our nose clean everything will be hunky-dory, that is, we will be healthy, wealthy, and wise.  We may be wiser, but health and wealth may stand at zero.  The apostles were in the center of God’s will and about to drown.  (Hebrews 11:36-38).

v THE STORMS OF LIFE TEACH US MANY VALUABLE LESSONS.  The Bible tells us, “For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” (Hebrews 12:6).  God loves His children so much that He corrects our ways.  One way He teaches us is by storms, as He is doing in this passage.  So, He teaches us to trust Him more or, perhaps He is teaching patience, or humility, or trust, or thankfulness, or a hundred other virtues.  Yes, indeed, God is in the storm, listen to Him.  (Job 23:10; Romans 8:28).

v THE DISCIPLES NEVER DREAMED OF TURNING BACK.  They could have turned the boat around, gone with the wind, and been safe on shore, but the thought never crossed their mind.  Jesus had told them to row over to the other side, that’s all they heard.  There was only one direction on their compass.  Satan can oppose them, but they will never turn back.  Dear Friend, we must never give up, never stop rowing.  The storm may be fierce, the future looks bleak, but by the grace of God, we will never give up!  (John 12:26; Philippians 3:14).

v GOOD NEWS! JESUS WAS WITH THEM ALL THE TIME.  The last time the disciples saw Jesus, He was going up the mountain to pray.  So far as the disciples knew He was still there.  Then, just as the disciples were about to abandon all hope, they see Jesus, walking on the water telling them, “Be not afraid.”  (Matthew 14:28-32).  Jesus is always telling His followers, “Be not afraid.”  Think of it, Jesus is always there even though you may not see him, or feel Him, or touch Him, or understand Him---He is there, so take heart and never give up!  (John 8:12; Hebrews 13:5).

v WITH JESUS, THEY SAFELY REACH PORT.  So, Jesus comes on board, and behold, “immediately” the ship was in port!  That simply means that when Jesus is with us, time stands still.  I have had Jesus with me since I was 10 years old, and it all seems like a brief, beautiful dream.  And with Jesus aboard I will arrive safely in heaven, I am as good as being there right now.  Friend, if Jesus isn’t on board your boat, ask Him in this very minute.  (John 1:12: 5:24).

Yes, in our wilderness journey, we encounter storms.  But not to fear, Jesus tells us: “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer:  I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:32).  That means that no matter which way the wind blows, there is always the hand of God!  (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5).  Because you prayed, and gave, we were able to send this message to the ends of the earth!
