Let Your Light Shine

Bible Study

Dear fellow worker of the Christian Worship Hour:

In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the greatest sermon ever preached, He told His followers what He expected of them.  Jesus commanded:

Let your light so shine among men, that they may see your good works,

and glorify your Father, which is in heaven” Matthew 5:16

From the writings of Pastor Salem:

Jesus is telling us to shine as a light in a pitch dark world.  What kind of a light does God want?

v IT MUST BE A PURE LIGHT.  In the good old days, we had lamps with wicks.  If the wicks weren’t trimmed right the flame would smoke up the lamp chimney and blur the light.  The same goes for God’s people, if we are going to have a light really shining for Jesus, we are going to have to clean up our act and live a separated life for God.  We are commanded to “come out from among them and be ye separate and touch not the unclean thing”.                           (II Corinthians 6:17; Romans 12:1).

v IT MUST BE A STRONG LIGHT.  WHY?  Because the Devil will try to blow it out!  If he can get a saint of God discouraged, the light won’t shine very strong or far.  If he can get God’s child all mixed up in the things of the world, there won’t be much light.  (II Corinthians 7:1).  Sometimes the Devil holds up a little piece of gold, and the weak Christian falls in love with it, and the light flickers and fails.  (Proverbs 16:25).

v IT MUST BE A STEADY LIGHT.  When the skies are grey and the strong wind blows----then, like a lighthouse on a cliff, the Christian needs to shine forth because when they see the light of our life and testimony, they are drawn to Jesus!  (Daniel 12:3; Galatians 6:9).

v IT NEEDS TO BE A CHEERFUL LIGHT.  Nehemiah said that “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).  When we are happy and joyous, it attracts people, that’s what they want.   There are some people you like to be around, and there are some you would like to quarantine.  Get a smile on your face and a spring in your step and the light will shine.  (Proverbs 16:13; II Corinthians 9:7).

v IT MUST BE EVER INCREASING.  God tells us that “the path of the just is like the shining light” (Proverbs 4:18).  The longer we walk with Jesus the closer we get to Him, and being close to Him lights up our life and the love of Jesus shines forth and brightens all about us and shows them the way home to heaven.  The Bible tells us, “The path of the just is like the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.”  (Proverbs 4:18).  Our light can help some poor, lost soul find his or her way to heaven.  (John 14:1-6).

So, we shine for Jesus!  We do it individually, and we do it as a body of Believers through the Christian Worship Hour.  Alone, we cannot reach all of the world, but as a body we are doing it through our ministry.  Help us shine with your PRAYERS & GIFTS.

So, in Jesus’ Name we thank you.

In our Savior’s love,

Pastor Salem

Somebody's Mother

“SOMEBODY’S MOTHER”

This month of May is a special month.  We honor and give thanks for Christian women and mothers. All too often they serve the Lord unknown and unappreciated.

We find just such a person in Mark’s Gospel, chapter 12. It is the story of an obscure, unappreciated woman.  There is little known of her.  We don’t know her name, we don’t know her occupation, we don’t know where she lived. In fact, we don’t even know if she was a mother.

But we do know she was pointed out by Jesus as an example of a God fearing woman. We know she lived in Jerusalem, that she was desperately poor, and that Jesus singled her out as a very Godly woman. That was shown when Jesus was at the temple treasury and saw her come and make her offering of two mites which make a farthing---a total of a fraction of a penny! Jesus told His disciples, “This poor widow hath cast more in than all they

who have cast into the treasury;” (Mark 12:43).

So, a word of comfort to all the unseen, unknown Christian women and

mothers---God sees all you do for Him in your little corner of the world.

So, take heart, Jesus sees you, and He cares.
